What is the color durability of silk screen glass

Source:www.cnxingfu.net      Release date: 2025-09-22
Information summary:The color persistence of silk screen glass is not a fixed value, but is determined by the printing process, ink type, glass substrate treatment method, and usage environment. It can be generally divided into two categories: "indoor scene" and "outdoor scene", and there are clear influencing factors and technical means to improve persistence.
       The color persistence of silk screen glass is not a fixed value, but is determined by the printing process, ink type, glass substrate treatment method, and usage environment. It can be generally divided into two categories: "indoor scene" and "outdoor scene", and there are clear influencing factors and technical means to improve persistence.
1、 Core influencing factors: key variables determining color persistence
       Whether the color of silk screen glass can remain stable for a long time essentially depends on the adhesion strength between ink and glass, as well as the ink's ability to resist environmental erosion, which depends on the following four points:
1. Ink type: the most crucial determining factor
       The chemical stability, light resistance, and weather resistance of different inks vary greatly, directly affecting the color life.
       Among them, high-temperature sintered ink has good durability - after printing, it needs to be sintered at a high temperature of 500-700 ℃. The glass powder in the ink melts and combines with the glass substrate to form an "ink glass integration" structure. The pigments (mostly heat-resistant inorganic pigments) are firmly fixed and almost will not fall off due to friction and humidity changes. It also has strong resistance to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and is a good choice for outdoor scenes.
2. Pre treatment of glass substrate
       If there are oil stains and impurities on the surface of the glass, it will cause the ink to not bond tightly with the glass, and long-term use is prone to "delamination and paint peeling", which will affect the color integrity. In professional processes, glass will be degreased (such as alkaline cleaning), sandblasted (to increase surface roughness), or coated (such as silane treatment) to enhance ink adhesion and indirectly extend color life.
3. The erosion intensity of the usage environment
       Indoor scene (no strong light, small temperature difference, no acid or alkali corrosion): Even low-temperature curing ink can maintain color for more than 3 years; High temperature sintered ink can last for more than 10 years without significant changes.
      Outdoor scenes (strong ultraviolet radiation, wind and rain erosion, large temperature difference, possible acid rain): Ultraviolet radiation can decompose the resin components in organic ink, causing color fading and whitening; Rainwater erosion can accelerate the detachment of loose ink, so only high-temperature sintered ink can withstand it for a long time, while low-temperature/UV ink is prone to failure.
      If strong acid or alkali cleaning agents (such as toilet cleaners and industrial descaling agents) are used for daily cleaning, it will corrode the surface of the ink during later maintenance; Frequent friction with a hard scraper or steel wire ball can directly scrape off the ink, which can shorten the color persistence. Proper maintenance should use neutral cleaning agents (such as dishwashing detergent) and a soft cloth for wiping.
2、 Color persistence performance in different application scenarios
Based on actual usage needs, the differences can be clearly seen:
1. Building exterior walls/curtain wall glass: Almost all use high-temperature sintered ink, which can last for 5-15 years in outdoor environments, with a color fading rate of less than 10% (i.e. almost no visible change to the naked eye). Some projects (such as landmark buildings) use imported inorganic pigments, with a lifespan of over 20 years.
2. Household appliance panel glass (such as washing machine, oven door): mostly high-temperature sintered or UV cured ink, stable indoor use environment, color can be maintained for 8-15 years, and it is resistant to friction and high temperature (if the oven door is heated for a long time, the color will not change significantly).
3. Indoor decorative glass (such as background walls and screens): If low-temperature curing ink is used, localized yellowing may occur after 3-5 years; If UV cured or high-temperature sintered ink is used, it can still maintain its bright color for 8-10 years.
4. Temporary/low-cost scenarios (such as exhibition decorative glass): Solvent based low-temperature ink may be used, with an indoor lifespan of only 1-2 years, which is prone to fading and delamination.
3、 How to determine and improve the color durability of silk screen glass?
1. Judgment method when making a purchase
      Ask about the type of ink: clarify whether it is "high-temperature sintered ink" (required for outdoor scenes), to avoid confusion of vague concepts such as "environmentally friendly ink" and "wear-resistant ink" for commercial and household use;
      Check the test report: Regular products will provide a "weather resistance test report" (such as xenon lamp aging test, simulating 5 years of outdoor ultraviolet irradiation, with a fading rate of ≤ 5% as qualified), and an "adhesion test report" (such as grid test, with no ink peeling as qualified);
     Observing ink texture: The high-temperature sintered ink has a smooth surface, high fusion with glass, and no obvious "raised edges"; Low temperature ink may have slight protrusions and leave marks on nails when scratched.
2. Technological directions to enhance durability
The industry mainly achieves through "ink upgrading" and "process optimization":
     Ink side: Replace traditional organic pigments with nano inorganic pigments to enhance light and temperature resistance; Apply a "weather resistant coating" (such as silica coating) on the surface of the ink to isolate ultraviolet rays and rainwater;
     Process end: Adopting the "double sintering process" (two high-temperature sintering processes) to further enhance the bonding strength between ink and glass; Extra "UV resistant coating" should be applied to outdoor glass to reduce the erosion of ink by UV rays.
