What are the important advantages of tempered glass compared to ordinary glass

Source:www.cnxingfu.net      Release date: 2025-10-14
Information summary:Tempered glass, as an upgraded version of ordinary glass, has core advantages concentrated in three dimensions: safety, strength, and stability. These advantages are also the key to its ability to widely replace ordinary glass and be applied in high-risk or high demand scenarios. The specific important advantages are as follows:
Tempered glass, as an upgraded version of ordinary glass, has core advantages concentrated in three dimensions: safety, strength, and stability. These advantages are also the key to its ability to widely replace ordinary glass and be applied in high-risk or high demand scenarios. The specific important advantages are as follows:
1、 Core Advantage 1: High safety, significantly reducing the risk of injury (the most critical advantage)
When ordinary glass is broken by external force, it will form sharp large fragments (similar to knife like pieces), which are prone to scratching the skin, causing deep cuts, and even causing more serious safety accidents (such as secondary injuries in falling scenes). Tempered glass, due to its "prestressed structure" (surface compressive stress, internal tensile stress), will instantly decompose into honeycomb shaped small particles without sharp edges and corners (particle diameter usually ≤ 5mm) after breakage.              These small particles are lightweight and have rounded edges, making it difficult to cause serious scratches or punctures even when in contact with the human body, and belong to the recognized "safety glass". This advantage makes it a mandatory or preferred choice for scenarios such as building curtain walls, indoor partitions, car glass, shower room glass, etc. - for example, if ordinary glass is used for shower room glass, it may cause serious injuries to the user if it breaks, while tempered glass can avoid such risks.
2、 Core Advantage 2: Strength far exceeds ordinary glass, with stronger impact and bending resistance
Under the same thickness, the physical strength of tempered glass is 3-5 times that of ordinary glass, which is reflected in two aspects:
Impact resistance: Tempered glass is more difficult to break when facing impacts such as hard objects falling or minor collisions. For example, 10mm thick tempered glass can withstand the impact of a 500g steel ball falling from a height of 1.2 meters without breaking, while ordinary glass of the same thickness may break from a height of 0.3 meters. This makes it suitable for use in high-rise windows, balcony guardrails, furniture countertops (such as glass coffee tables), and other vulnerable scenarios.
Bending resistance: Tempered glass has higher bending strength and can withstand larger spans or loads without bending deformation. For example, in building glass canopies, ordinary glass may bend and break due to its own weight or rainwater load, while tempered glass can provide stable support and reduce the risk of structural deformation.
3、 Core Advantage 3: Excellent thermal stability, able to withstand severe temperature differences (avoiding "hot and cold explosions")
The thermal stability of ordinary glass is poor. When the local temperature suddenly rises or falls (such as when a warm air heater is attached to the inside of the glass in winter or when outdoor glass is suddenly poured with cold water in summer), due to the large temperature difference between the inside and outside of the glass, uneven thermal expansion and contraction, it is easy to cause "thermal explosion" (such as pouring boiling water on cold glass, ordinary glass is likely to break). Tempered glass can withstand a temperature difference of about three times that of ordinary glass, and can stably cope with temperature changes of around 200 ℃ (such as sudden exposure to 80 ℃ hot water from -20 ℃ outdoors, tempered glass is not easy to explode). This advantage makes it suitable for use in scenarios with large temperature fluctuations, such as glass baffles next to kitchen stoves, car windshields (to cope with the temperature difference between warm air inside the car in winter and low temperature outside), and sunroom glass (to cope with the alternation of high temperature during the day and low temperature at night).
4、 Additional advantages: higher surface hardness, more scratch resistant, less prone to wear and tear
The surface hardness of tempered glass can reach a Mohs hardness of 6.5 (ordinary glass is about 5.5), which is close to the hardness of quartz stone. It is more difficult to be scratched by sharp objects (such as keys and metal tools) in daily use. For example, ordinary glass tabletops may show obvious scratches after prolonged use, while tempered glass tabletops can maintain a relatively flat surface even after being placed on hard objects for a long time and subjected to slight friction, reducing the decrease in aesthetics and shortened service life caused by scratches.
